The Majhi community is one of the many ethnic groups in Nepal. They primarily reside collectively along riverbanks, characterized by simplicity, hard work, honesty, sociability, and straightforwardness. With their distinct language, customs, culture, and lifestyle, the Majhi community has a unique identity. Among the 60 ethnic groups listed by the Government of Nepal, the Majhi community is classified as highly marginalized.
Traditional and Current Occupation
Traditionally, agriculture has been the primary occupation of the Majhi community. In earlier times, they were known for fishing and operating boats on river crossings. However, due to a decline in fish availability in rivers and the construction of bridges over waterways, their traditional livelihoods faced challenges, compelling them to adopt alternative professions. Today, in addition to agriculture, some members of the Majhi community are engaged in small businesses, employment, and foreign labor migration. Although their representation in government jobs remains minimal, a few individuals have recently secured government positions.
Preservation and Development Needs
The preservation of the Majhi language, customs, and culture has become essential. The development of education, enhancement of awareness, political consciousness, and income-generating activities are critical to ensuring the community’s progress. Integrating the Majhi people into the mainstream of national development while promoting their identity and overall growth is a pressing need.
Establishment of Nepal Majhi Upliftment Association
With the goal of preserving their unique language, customs, and culture and fostering education and awareness, the Nepal Majhi Upliftment Association was established in 2054 B.S. (1997 A.D.) in Sunsari district. This organization is dedicated to uniting the Majhi community, preserving their heritage, and promoting development. Since its inception, the association has been actively working to raise awareness, promote education, and secure the rights of the Majhi people.
Program Implementation: Execute programs in alignment with Nepal’s international treaty commitments.
Our mission is to preserve and promote the Majhi language, art, culture, and traditions while advancing education, rights, and development within the community. We strive to strengthen unity among Majhi people, advocate for their welfare and justice, and collaborate with national and international organizations to achieve sustainable progress in harmony with Nepal’s cultural and treaty commitments.
To build a united, educated, and empowered Majhi community that proudly preserves its rich language, culture, and heritage while actively contributing to an inclusive and equitable society.
Guided by our deep respect for Majhi heritage, we strive to preserve our language, culture, and traditions while strengthening unity among our people. We believe education empowers, justice uplifts, and collaboration builds a brighter future. With honesty, dedication, and community spirit, we work to ensure lasting growth and dignity for every Majhi.
